How to Start Your Mazda When the Key Fob Battery is Dead
If you've ever walked up to your car and your Mazda key fob doesn’t unlock the door, it’s likely the battery has gone flat. While it can feel like a stressful moment, there’s a simple solution!
At Ringwood Mazda, we often get asked: “What do I do if my Mazda key fob battery is dead?” In this blog, our Assistant Service Manager, Rocky, walks you through the quick steps to get you back on the road, even if your key battery has died.
Step 1: Manually Unlock Your Mazda
Even if your key fob isn’t working, you can still unlock the car manually. Your Mazda key has a hidden mechanical key inside. Simply push the small switch on your fob to slide out the key. You’ll find a keyhole on the driver’s side door—use the manual key to unlock it.
Step 2: Start the Engine Without a Working Key Battery
Once you’re inside, place the key fob against the start/stop button. Even with a dead battery, the proximity sensor will still recognise the key when it’s close. Press the brake, then press the start button as normal. Your Mazda should fire up without a problem. This process works for most push-start Mazda models, including the Mazda3, CX-5, CX-30, and Mazda6.
Step 3: Replace Your Mazda Key Battery ASAP
A dead key battery won’t damage your vehicle, but it’s definitely inconvenient. At Ringwood Mazda, we recommend replacing your key battery every 12–18 months, or sooner if you notice reduced range or unresponsiveness.
